Autumn 2002 Newsletter

Greetings all.
It's been a while since you've heard from us. So that doesn't happen again we've changed our format slightly. Inside we've got some great things, upcoming events, new menu items, special offers as well as reports on places to eat out of town.
Lots of things that have happened since our last newsletter but the most current is the great listing we received in the new Zagat Guide. We're glad they said we're "better than most at a fraction of the price" but we're even more pleased to to know that "the food, along with the dedicated, loyal staff, makes it worth the drive to Fort Bragg". We're really proud of our staff and are thankful to have them recognized. Thanks to all of you who participated in the Zagat survey, we really appreciate it.
We're also proud of winning the Mendocino Crab and Wine Days Crabcake Cookoff in 2002 and are looking forward to competing again this year. If you haven't been to either of Mendocino County's food and wine festivals, you should mark your calender now.
For those of you we see often, thank you. Your support is invaluable. For those we haven't seen in a while, where have you been ? Come try our new food and see what you've been missing.

The Challenge

Spot the typo in our print newsletter and we'll give you 10% off your next visit to Mendo Bistro.

The Answers

We're no longer serving lunch. Dinner 7 nights a week is enough. Fortunately a few places have opened up for lunch in our stead. We are also providing some food to the Headlands Coffeehouse, so if you need a Bistro fix and we're closed, head there for one of our specials.
Our lift is working. Thanks to everyone who wrote letters or made calls to our landlord and for all of you who were so very patient while we begged and pleaded with them to make the necessary repairs.
To encourage you to use our website, we do offer specials via the internet that are not available in the print version of our newsletter. Check the site www.mendobistro.com for more details. For those of you without access, most public libraries have computers available for your use.
If you are an artist and would like to be considered for a show at Mendo Bistro, please call 964-4974 between 12-4pm for an appointment.

Staff News

Join us in welcoming John Erwin and Amelia Shattuck to the Bistro family. New sous chef John is a local boy who went off to the California Culinary Academy and came to us via Catahoula in Calistoga. Look for this Giants fan's orange mohawk to change color as football season starts. Amelia, (who just graduated high school along with fellow busser Dusty Miller) is a budding glass blower.
In sadder news, we lost a wonderful person on October 27, 2001 when long-time friend and former lunch cook Gene Brown's heart, always too big for his body, failed him. We miss you more than words can say Gene.

Top of the Barrel

Our wine list now features solely Mendocino County vintners. While this may seem limiting, we believe wine is a food best enjoyed in the context of a meal. Since much of our food reflects the bounty of our region it is only fitting our wine list do the same.
Besides, we run the gamut here in Mendocino County as the Wine Enthusiast recently pointed out. From the award-winning Lazy Creek Vineyards' 2000 Gewurztraminer (named top Gewurz in the U.S.) to new-comer Maple Creek's Cowboy Red, a toothsome blend, we've got everything you need to complement your dinner at Mendo Bistro. You can get the big Napa and Sonoma wines anywhere. Make a Mendocino discovery.

To make sure you're enjoying Mendo Bistro to the fullest we're offering you one free appetizer per table with an entrée purchase. Just present this coupon and enjoy an appetizer on us.

Other Tables, Other Chairs

We've been to quite a few places since our last report and we can't list them all. Here are the highlights.
On a recent trip to the Anderson Valley we stayed at La Casita (707) 895-3625, a lovely getaway spot that immediately felt like home (only warmer), and had great tacos at the Moya Taco Truck on 128. Dinner at Lauren's in Boonville is always good and the friendly service hits the spot. In Cotati, we sampled BBQ at Bear Korean, where they bring you about a dozen weird and wonderful side dishes with your meal.
Lunch at Waterboy in Sacramento was great. On the same trip we also hit the Napa Valley and had a terrific time at Mustards Grill. We recently re-visited 2223 in San Francisco, the New American food was great, the service phenomenal.
Further away from home the legendary La Superica Tortilleria in Santa Barbara was a welcome sight on our drive to Los Angeles and lunch at Jean-Georges in NYC was everything a restaurant experience should be and is so rarely. For more information about any of these, ask us when you come in.

Other recent press

Many of you commented on our feature in The Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Diane Peterson did a wonderful article and the photo is one of our favorites. Some of you may also have seen the feature on Mendocino County in the May Wine Enthusiast. We were fortunate enough to be called a "lesser known place that deserves your attention". The Sacramento Bee featured us in Taste, we've been in recent issues of Chef Magazine, Sante and the on-line trade journal On The Rail.

Composters Needed

If you are in need of a large amount of organic material for composting, please give us a call. Alternatively you could feed pigs or chickens with our kitchen trimmings and we'd buy the eggs from you.
